Session 7 - Prayer

What are the keys to developing a good friendship with someone?

Good relationships require communicating, taking time to get to know the other person, listening, making time for each other...

PRAYER includes many of the same characteristics of good friendship: talking, listening, making time, and sometimes just being quiet with each other.

PRAYER is a two-way relationship between God and us.

Early Prayers

The first prayers you prayed were the ones someone else taught you.  Most likely by someone in your family, or perhaps at Faith Formation classes.

Prayer before Meals

Prayer before Bedtime

SIgn of the Cross

The Glory Be

The Our Father

The Hail Mary

The Guardian Angel Prayer

As we grow, we search for prayers that are more complex and expressive than reciting from memory.  The early prayers are very specific and are also one-sided

Our prayers become something deeper and more personal.  We begin to use our own words to express our feelings to God.  We also learn to listen!

Petition telling God our desires and asking Him to meet our needs.

Sometimes, it may seem as though our prayers are not answered.  We didn't get what we said we needed.  Scripture tells us God loves us and has good plans for us, even if we can't see what they are.

We have to trust that God knows our needs better than we do, and He wants what's best for us. And sometimes that means going through trials that eventually draw us closer to God and help us to be better people.

That's why Jesus taught us to pray that God's will, not ours, be done.  (Remember? in the "Our Father') thanking God for all the blessings He's given us.

Studies have shown that gratitude makes people happier and more satisfied by helping us appreciate what we have rather than what we don't.

Thank You

Intercession praying for other people, that God will bless them and help them with whatever they're going through.

It's a great way to care for other people and to try to love your enemies like Jesus asked us to.

...Worship is offering ourselves back to God in the way He asks.

We can worship by getting quiet in God's presence and basking in His goodness. The main way we worship is through the Mass.  We also do it by living our lives in a way that pleases God, honoring Him and serving others.

...Praise is acknowledging God for who He is, apart from anything He can do for us.

One example is singing praise songs like the Gloria during Mass
